i live three blocks from the county jail. haha.

no really, 3 blocks. we discovered this little fact a few days ago... and on further examination, it's totally true. a lot of the small county/city government offices are nearby in downtown redwood city (which is, well, 3 blocks away -- and actually quite cozy and cute with yummy cafes), but that county/city building complex includes the county jail. some of the dinky businesses nearby have fluorescent BAIL BONDS 24/7 signs on the windows. it's great :)

today, i withdrew $875 from my bank account (for next month's rent and the remainder of the security deposit), and i realized that hmm... i need a source of income. for a while, i was happily receiving $10 bills from emsense for willingly subjecting myself to brainwashing/testing, but now that i'm in redwood city, i'm spending way more moola that i actually have. good thing i set up a savings account way back when.

the house is finally in a state of semi-order. our living room is no longer filled to the ceiling with my boxes of books and clothes (though there IS still one uber-large box in the corner that i've yet to tackle); the kitchen's looking pretty good except for when vegas-the-puppy forgets about bladder control; and my bedroom officially has a pathway for walking now. during the past week, weaving between boxes, cardboard, screwdrivers, nails, papers, and plastic ikea bags was rather treacherous. but alas, i can see the carpet again. it's so nice and clean :)

my job search is absolutely insane. i had --- FIVE -- interviews last week, three of which all happened to fall on a lovely friday. and i spoke on the phone to the interviewers more than once (or twice or thrice) to arrange talk times and meeting times and blah blah blah. most of the interviews went well, i think, so now i'm just sitting and waiting for more information. i technically accepted a part-time offer at MSI (marine science institute! yahoo!), but since i've yet to hear about training and a start date, i think they're a little skeptical as to whether or not i'll actually be working for them. hmmm... and for once, job takes precedence over vacationing and fun (gah), so i'm not going to the inaugural dc-climber trip to rumney, nh over labor day weekend. they're gonna do a multi-pitch climb... i'm jealous. boo boo boo. and moo for good measure. BOO.

anyway, hopefully, things will settle down eventually, and i'll soon have a job (and transportation and benefits and colleagues) to worry about instead of fretting over the number of ill-placed holes (so far, 8) i've managed to drill/poke/hammer into my bedroom wall. hehe. but i have to say -- i remember, 6 years ago, that i'd get bored during empty summers without school. HA. no more. i love free time :O)

vegas-the-puppy is stupendous despite two sleepless nights earlier last week. he's growing, and he's hyper, and he's uber-cute and fuzzy and soft. and he chews at the plants in our itty-bitty front yard, and he gets really excited when he successfully pees and poops outside. and he's a sucker for tummy rubs and dog treats. he also humped one of susan's pooh-bear pillows the other day.... that was disturbing. i guess male dogs are sexual beings even at 9 weeks. eesh. ha.

aaand i have a new niece. she's furry and barely a week old. katherine. to go along with the now-18-month madeleine. maddy actually recognizes me now... she only frowns a little bit. and she readily gives me a high-five -- pretty sweet :) and man, there's tons of people in cali.. or at least, lots of people who visit or pass through or are temporarily stationed here for work or are planning on moving to the area. and the weather -- good god -- is CRAZY. i know i know, weather is not something to talk about, especially 'cause i've mentioned it numerous times before, but lordy -- it's dry (YAY), it's sunny, it's breezy, it's making me delusional. i can't remember the last time it rained. i haven't checked weather.com in months; i've completely ditched that website -- it used to be my best friend in boston and dc.

speaking of boston, the poor red sox. siiiiiiiiiiiiiigh.

photos coming, yeah yeah.

kick back, relax, and...

it's true: while i had a 9-5 job, i blogged more. that says something about the worthiness of 8-to-9 hour workdays, huh? jobs just need to be more efficient, and then, employers and industries won't have to worry about their employees being bored, wasting time (and money), and surfing the 'net instead of actually working.

anyway, i'm still in monterey. BUT i'm moving upppp to redwood city SOON! yahooligans. the new carpet is ready, the walls have been repainted, i'm working on turning on the utilities, and susan has the keys: i'm ready for my own place :) and i've discovered that rwc is a convenient distance to the grand city of san fran. i must say -- i like san francisco. i think i'm still in that "i like cities" mode. maybe when i'm wrinklier, saggier, and aged, i'll start to shy away from the excitement and life of urbanity and become content with the strip malls of suburbia, but for the time being, cities are quite nice. especially with good weather :)

so what have i been doing?

looking for jobs... really. i have an offer (that i have to turn down), i had an interview last week, i have an interview this week, and i'm still applying. i've been sleeping lots. i haven't been running. i haven't been climbing, boo. i've been driving between monterey and the bay area a ton. i went mattress shopping. and furniture shopping a little. i've been moving willie's stuff to his new place. i've been cooking a lot, and cleaning... living out of my duffel bags, worrying about my car, meeting up with old friends, searching craigslist like it's the only site in the web universe, paying credit card bills, going out on lovely weekend expeditions, planning out the future, wondering about dc, getting over deformities, watching boomtown on dvd, running errands back and forth, taking pictures, emailing resumes, napping, talking to employers on the phone and going way over my minute allotment, disliking verizon, digging my toes into the sand, writing cover letters like it's my job (but it's not), avoiding pharmaceutical companies, not watching tv or playing video games or reading books (strangely), getting to know monterey quite well, glaring at california drivers, planning around rush hours on 101 and 280 (and sometimes, 156), eating pseudo-healthily, perusing farmer's markets, laughing at the boys, being amazed that it's mid-august, and... hey, i'm enjoying the summer.

:)

last last last weekend: some calm hiking around an uber-foggy, but still incredibly gorgeous, big sur (central cali coast).

the dudes check out the waves below. mmmm, look at that rock :)

last last weekend: camping and spear-fishing and abalone hunting (the latter of the two which i just observed) up above sf along the coast near bodega bay.. or somewhere rural like that.

empty abalone shells

nerds will be nerds, even outdoors

the past weekend: sf for beeg and greg's housewarming party, then wandering around union square on saturday.

next weekend: the move. lots of boxes, one big uhaul, one yellow house.
