post-camp

i briefly talked/im'ed with "old" opie earlier today, and he reminded to post in my blog.

haha.

i'd sorta forgotten about this thing.

but it's late august now, and i've survived 9 full weeks (and the 9 months leading up to) of the tech museum summer camps. i ran it; my official title is "director", which means that i plan and run every aspect -- marketing, recruiting (outreach and hiring), curriculum development, and operations -- along with all the tiny little details that seem to fill up 12 hours each day. we served 2092 kids this summer, and i had an amazing staff of 45. it's been insane, and i've been pretty ridiculously exhausted all summer. but in the end, as i sit back and reflect while crunching numbers and doing analysis, it was solidly awesome too. talk about a great work experience.

it's kinda neat to feel useful -- and KNOW that i do something important in the whole scheme of things. it was wonderful working with a great number of inspired people throughout the summer, and it's so hilarious to find the cutest (and smartest and nerdiest!) kids who can't wait to say hi to you in the morning, or to tell you about their latest discovery, or to discuss their favorite baseball player with you during lunch, or to run into camp on thursday morning, dressed as a star wars character because clone wars was debuting (?!). right. it's awesome nerdy fun.

i'm wrapping up. and then soon, i'll start thinking about 2009.

the summer's been busy, and i feel an unbelievable craving to go outside, exercise, and travel. AND SLEEP! but i think i'll get a chance to do all of that in the next month or so. i guess i'm finally getting over the idea of "summer break" :)

what else? well, for the last 9 weeks, 60 hrs per week, my mind and body have been wrapped around summer camp. but on the weekends and in the evenings, we've been working on renovating a splendiferous 1990 vw vanagon :D

it satisfies my craving for building and re-doing. it's also a HUGE learning curve and a ton of work. but fun too, when you ignore the fact that we need to be done within 1.5 weeks, and there's still a propane tank to install, flooring to secure, upholstery to finish, a/c to fix, hydraulic lifters to troubleshoot, and the camper conversion to bolt down. it's all designed though!! good stuff.

anything else? olympics swimming, some good cooking here and there, and lots of collapsing on the weekends. not a bad summer, huh?
